Personal Details

Edward Llewellyn Hughes was born in the 4th quarter of 1892, son of George and Susan Hughes of 16 Stepney Street, Cwmbwrla, Swansea.

Edward was baptised on 24 Mar 1893 at St Lukes, Cwmbwrla. At that time, his father George’s occupation was given as Labourer.

In the 1901 Census, the family were living at 17 Stepney Street. his father George was working as a General Labourer and living has living with his wife Susan and their 7 children, George (18 – printers compositor), Mary E (15 – Dressmakers apprentice), Winifred (11), Edward Ll (8), Brinley C (5), Evelyn M (3) and William H F (11mnths). .

In the 1911 Census, the family were back at 16 Stepney Street. George is listed as a Masons Labourer at a Copper Works and he was living with his wife Susan and 5 children, George (28 – 4th hand xxxxx Furnace, Steel Works), Edward Llewellyn (18 – Ferro Dumper, Steel Works), Brynley Clement (15 – Behinder Template Mills, Tinpate Works), Evelyn Matilda (13) and William Henry Fraser (10)

Edward married Lilian Maud Ball on January 15th 1916 at St Pauls, Sketty. Edward gave his occupation as Steelworker and address as St Neots, Huntingdon.

Edward died of Pneumonia on 24th December 1916 and was buried at the Babell Chapel, Cwmbwrla on 30th Dec 1916.

Military Service

Edward enlisted as a Gunner in the 1st Welsh (Howitzer) Brigade on 22nd Feb 1915 in Swansea. He was given the service number 1205 and his medical record describes him as 5 foot 10 inches tall and 144lbs.

His service record has survived and shows that he was posted to the second line unit, the 2/1st Welsh (How) Bde on 27th Mar 1915.

On 6th Sept 1916 was posted to 232 TF Depot as Trumpeter, his record adds ‘on being released for Munition Work with the Cwmfelin Steel & Tinplate Co Ltd, Swansea’.

The final entry in his service record states he ‘Died of Pneumonia at Swansea, 24.12.16’.

Trumpeter Edward Llewellyn Hughes was buried with full military honours on 30th Dec 1916 at the Babell Chapel, Cwmbwrla and is commemorated on the Screen Wall at Cardiff Western Cemetery.
