Its been a bit of a slow month as I’ve needed to focus on finding a new job. That said, progress has included uploading the Rees Williams photo album, another trip to the National Archives, carrying on with the 1916 page as well as finishing another 4 profiles.
The absolute highpoint for me was making contact with a descendant of 823, William Jenkins Rees who was able to give me a series of fantastic new pictures including postcards sent to his sister from Northampton as well as 2 new pictures of men in the desert. It’s also worth adding that he is listed as the Shoeing Smith of the A Sub team (one of the guns in the 2nd Glamorgan Battery) in my Gt Uncles photo album. The pictures are all now in his profile.
The low point is the frustration I’m having with researching 2 particular men. Percy Reeves Dangerfield and Harold Charles Rowe were both 1914 recruits and were given commissions in early 1915. Despite finding a wide range of sources and photographs relating to each of them, I am still unable to confirm their service numbers and give them their rightful place on the Nominal Roll.
Detailed Stats
In summary, I’ve still made little progress on the soldiers who joined between 1908 and 1912 (although I have a long list of the names of men who I know were in the Brigade from the newspapers, but I have no other details). However, thanks to the greater number of records around the war, I have found a large proportion of the later recruits (and once again, I know the names, but not numbers of many, many more).
Next month
In June, I’m hoping to do the following:
- Finally finish the 1916 History page
- Do a detailed run through of the Royal Artillery Attestation Lists on Find My Past to see if that throws up any clues.
- Draft a more detailed page on what service numbers tell us.
- And update the Rees Williams Album with more information.
