Military Service

"Sergeant-Major Campbell came from the North of England, and joined the old 1st Glamorgan RGA (Volunteers) in 1888, eventually seeing the unit converted to Field Artillery as the 1st Glamorgan Battery, RFA, on the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908.

Rising to the rank of Battery Sergeant -Major in this unit, he proceeded with it on active service in 1915, and saw service in France, Egypt and Palestine, retiring at the end of the war.

The late Sergeant-Major was a fine example of the efficiency obtainable by a 'citizen soldier', and carried out his military duties with the heart and zeal of a professional, while still following his daily occupation. He was a compendium of drill books and instruction manuals of 30 years ago.

Many one-time recruits at Swansea Castle and the Central Drill Hall will remember his masterly instruction at gun and foot drill delivered under rigid discipline, albeit with a kindly eye for the clumsiness of a young soldier. He lived up to his favorite motto of 'Deeds not Words'".

Major Oliver Portsmouth quoted in the South Wales Evening Post, 23/2/1940 (Newspapers.com)
