Military Service

Joined 19th (Alexandra Princess of Wales Own) Hussars as a Boy Soldier on 18 October 1902 and given the number 5573. His form shows that he had previously served with the 1st Glamorgan Volunteer Artillery,

Served in South Africa between 13 May 1903 and 9 February 1904 and became a Private when he reached 18 in February 1905. Newspapers show he was part of the Band and played the clarinet.

Discharged 21 July 1909. His record states At his own request on payment of £25.

Shortly after, joined the 1st Welsh (Howitzer) Brigade. Unfortunately, no service records have survived but based on service number, he enlisted somewhere between June 1909 and May 1910.

Played with Band at Paris in 1912 - interviewed 1949

No records found that suggest he served overseas, so reasonable to assume he remained with the 2nd Line (based predominantly in East Anglia) throughout the war.
