18/3/18 - Accidentally killed in France Witness Statement. No 86345 Bdr DAY R B/124 states: - At 9a.m. on the morning of the 18th I was NCO in charge of the Brigade Salvage Party. I pointed out the area to be cleared and started the party to work. About 9,10am there was an explosion by the Railway line where the salvage was being dumped. I heard Sgt WILKINSON call for shell dressings and I ran across with some. I found No. 686950 Driver RADCLIFFE and No. 74312 Gunner GRAHAM badly wounded. I helped dress them but they both died almost at once and neither of them spoke. I looked around for the cause of the accident and saw an 18 pdr shrapnel shell case which had obviously just burst, the base only was left. The two men were lying very near this shell which was actually on the dump of salvaged shell. The base of the shell was corroded with rust shewing that it had been detached from a cartridge for some time. Final Unit C/242 Bde
