-----------------

Dvr Aaron Williams's service record was destroyed during the Blitz, but based on his service number, he most likely enlisted in the 1st Welsh Howitzers (a territorial army unit) either on 31 May or 1 June 1915, most likely in Swansea.

He would initially have trained in Swansea with the 3rd Line, but later moved to Winchester where it is likely that he transferred to the Regular RFA in September 1916 and served with a Regular unit throughout the war. Unfortunately no records suggest where or with whom he served, although the 3 overseas chevrons on his uniform in the photograph confirm that he served overseas in 1916, 17 and 18.

In 1917, the territorial army was renumbered with 6 digit numbers. He was initially given 725616, which was part of the sequence for the Howitzers, but this was cancelled and he would have been given a Regular service number (likely starting with 168). At the end of the war due to enlistment in the Territorial Force, this was revised and he was given a 6-digit number associated with the Howitzers which was 726143. It is possible that he only found out that number when he received his medals.
