3 August 1917: Mr and Mrs Daniel Lewis, Mill Court, have been informed that their elder son (Pte Jack Lewis, RFA) has been wounded in France. The news was conveyed by letter from Lieut. Ellis RFA, in which he adds "I feel sure you have no cause to worry. A small piece of shrapnel hit him near his right shoulder blade. After putting on a field dressing we were able to get him away to the doctor immediately where he would get every possible attention. He was quite calm and collected and i am sure he is not in any danger. We were all very sorry to lose him and on behalf of myself and the other officers I should like to tell you how highly we thought of him. Always cheerful and one of the hardest workers in the battery. We will miss him very much and I trust he will very soon make a complete recovery and be himself again.
