It will be learned with interest in this district that Sergt.-Major Ifor D. Thomas, of the Royal Field Artillery, has been awarded a commission on the field of battle in France. He is the eldest son of Mr. Philip Thomas, the headmaster of the Gnoll Council Schools, Neath, and is well-known in musical circles. Formerly a school teacher at Coedfranc Schools, Skewen, he was a Welsh Union (Rugby) referee, and enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, and whilst in France was made Sergt.-Major. During the great advance at the end of September he led a company which captured a number of prisoners..Glamorgan Gazette, 28 Jan 1916, WNL.
