MORRISTON BANDSMAN'S DEATH The death occurred on Saturday... of Mr Sam Hanney.. in his 73rd year. He was one of six sons, all musicians, of the late Bandmaster George Hanney, for many years bandmaster of the 1st GVA Band, Morriston.

On his father's death in 1908, Mr Sam Hanney became bandmaster of the band which was then attached to the 1st Welsh Howitzer Brigade.

Prior to the last war the band took part in competition and in 1911 won the first prize at Crystal Palace out of 21 competitors and in 1912 was placed second.

PARIS SUCCESS. IN 1911 the band also took part in an international band contest in Paris, where it also gained first prize on the test piece "William Tell" against seven other European bands, comprising two German, three French, one Belgian, and one from Luxemburg.

The band ceased to exist in 1922.

Mr Hanney served for a period dduring the last war.
